The State of the Game: LoL Esports in 2024

LoL Esports

Elevating the stakes in competition stands as a key objective for our international events. In 2023, format adjustments were implemented in both MSI and Worlds, eliminating matches that had no impact on the tournament's outcome. As we look ahead to 2024, our aim is to further intensify the competition surrounding MSI and establish a more robust connection between MSI and Worlds.

For the upcoming season, a baseline of 3 Worlds slots will be allocated for the LEC, LCS, LCK, and LPL. The PCS and VCS will each retain two Worlds slots, while the LLA and CBLOL will hold one each. These changes pave the way for innovative avenues, allowing teams and regions to showcase their strengths and earn additional Worlds slots through standout performances at MSI.

Breaking new ground, the victorious team at MSI will secure a guaranteed spot at Worlds, serving as an additional slot for their region. The second-best performing region at MSI will earn an extra seed for their region. To ensure that teams qualifying early for Worlds remain committed to success in their home leagues, qualification for their region's summer playoffs is required, except the LEC, where teams will qualify for the LEC Regional Finals.

Using the MSI 2023 results as an illustration, JDG would automatically qualify for Worlds, enabling a total of 4 LPL teams to qualify. The next best-performing region, in the case of MSI '23, the LCK, would secure an additional Worlds seed, bringing the total to 4.

These adjustments are anticipated to heighten the stakes and establish a meaningful connection between the two pivotal moments in the LoL Esports season: MSI and Worlds.

Moving on to the locations for MSI and Worlds 2024, MSI will be held from May 1–19 in Chengdu, China, marking the first time a global LoL Esports event is hosted in this vibrant city. Updates on tickets, schedules, and more will be provided soon. Worlds 2024 will return to Europe, with the Finals in London, England, at the iconic O2 Arena. The tournament stages will kick off in Berlin at the newly remodeled Riot Games Arena for the Play-Ins and Swiss Stages, followed by the Adidas Arena in Paris, France, for both the quarterfinals and semifinals. Worlds 2024 is scheduled to take place from September 25 to November 2, with ongoing updates throughout the year.

Celebrating 14 years of LoL Esports, we are proud to introduce the LoL Esports Hall of Legends for the 2024 season. This unique Hall of Fame will honor pro players who have left a lasting impact on the game, the sport, and the community. An independent voting panel of esports industry veterans and experts from every region will select the inaugural inductee, with annual celebrations of inductees' historic careers both in real life and in-game.

As we gear up for the 2024 competitive season, regional leagues are set to commence on the following dates:
LEC: Jan 13
LLA: Jan 16
LCK: Jan 17
PCS: Jan 19
LCS: Jan 20
VCS: Jan 20
CBLOL: Jan 20
LPL: Jan 22

Exciting moments await in the upcoming LoL Esports season! Best of luck on your journey, and be sure to tune in to watch your favorite regions compete at lolesports.com.
